IAMI Secures Contract to Develop Digital Assessment Platform for UK Maritime Sector
The International Association of Maritime Institutions (IAMI) has been awarded a contract by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency to develop and implement a new digital assessment platform for trainee seafarers in the UK. This web-based system is intended to modernise the assessment process for maritime qualifications.
The new platform is set to be rolled out by early 2026 and is designed to replace traditional paper-based methods with a more secure and efficient digital solution. It will be used by IAMI members and their exam centres globally to deliver assessments for a range of Deck, Engine, and Electro-Technical Officer Certificates of Competency.
With an anticipated capacity of up to 4,000 candidates annually, the system will offer diverse question types, including:
● Multiple-choice and open-ended questions.
● Interactive elements like annotation of high-quality 2D and 3D images, such as electronic navigation charts (ENC).
● Support for written or sketch-based answers.
To ensure assessment integrity, the platform will feature automated marking where suitable, a streamlined workflow for human markers and moderators, and the ability to auto-generate unique examination papers from a secure question bank. The platform will be designed for reliability and security, with a focus on data protection and compliant with Cyber Security Essentials.
In a move to strengthen the organisation for this and future initiatives, IAMI has also announced a key leadership appointment, with Gillian Ferguson FCIPD taking on the role of Interim Chief Executive Officer.
"Securing this contract underscores IAMI's commitment to advancing maritime education and its role in delivering robust, high-integrity assessment services," said Gillian Ferguson FCIPD, Interim Chief Executive Officer of IAMI. "This new platform will provide a modern, flexible, and secure solution to meet the evolving assessment needs of the maritime sector."
IAMI will provide comprehensive technical assistance and training to support system users in the transition.
This initiative reinforces IAMI's role as a leader in maritime education, leveraging technology to provide a transparent, reliable, and globally accessible assessment service.
